History

The original rugged valley was difficult to negotiate at the beginning of the 19th century. At the time torrential and uncontrolled Bode had a higher water level, one could only move up the valley through the water channel, as the paths had not been formed. Only with the development of the hotel and tourist trade were the first narrow walking trails created around 1818.
Boundary stones show us that the Bode river was formerly a boundary river. The right bank belonged to Prussia and the left side above the Bode - basin belonged to the Brunswick Duchy.
As early as 1937, the Bode Valley between Thale and Treseburg (475ha.) was declared a nature reserve.

Geology

The formation of the Bode Valley and the Harz mountain range began with sediments deposited on the sea bottom. These sediments from weather beaten rocks were carried to the sea by rivers. The original form of our mountain chain was created by violent volcanic activity throughout the region 285 - 300 million years ago. 70 million years ago a last change took place in the sedimentary rock formation, which led to the opening up of the way for the Bode river to form. Since then the power of the water alone designed the bizarre and rugged Bode Valley.
