Flora

An oasis of rare plants and animals has developed on both sides of the Bode river in the environments of differtent micro-climates and contours.
The dark sided cliffs like the Hirsch and Taschengrund are real paradises for plants of many varieties. Besides the alps-aster, a relic from the glacial period, daphne and orchids can also be found in the Bode Valley. Green plants like fern and mooses colonise the cracks in the rock. A large number of lichen can be discovered in the rubble, in rocks on trunks and on the forest floor. Approximately 500 regional kinds of plants are known and the evergreen yew is a surprise among the deciduous trees. The huge amount of timber of the Bode Valley ranks among the most voluminous in North Germany.
