The famous rock (403m. or 1209 ft.) above the left Bode bank is one of the greatest rock formations north of the alps. For centuries many sagas have been told about it.

Legend

The kings daughter, Brunhilde, was pursued by wild Böhmen king Bodo who wanted to marry her against her will. In fear of death the princess risked the foolhardy jump over the Bode Valley from Hexentanzplatz to Rosstrappe rock whilst riding her horse. The print of the horses' hoof was imprinted into the stone as it landed on the rock plateau. Bodo's horse refused the jump and fell into the Bode river with the knight still in the saddle.
The knight changed into a black dog which guards the crown lost by the princess during the jump.

History
A castle called "Winzenburg" was probably located near the cliff in early history. The high stonewall offered defence for the people and their livestock during difficult times, while at the same time offering a place to worship.

The Schurre has 18 steep turns to Rosstrappe. The pathway was built in 1864 and is partly paved. During the formation of the Harz mountains boulders were shaped and exposed by extensive erosion. The Schurre leads throught this field of boulders and the name Schurre refers to the stones scraping and sliding against each other during heavy rainfall. Because of the nature of its formation the Schurre will remain a permanent walkway.

Hiking Trails
The Thale Information is the starting point. You can go straight on across Parkstrasse, past the Herz-Jesu church, over the bridge and then turn left and continue along Goetheweg. On the right you can see the chairway and after that the cabin railway. Continue to the next corner in the Bode Valley where you turn right and follow Präsidentenweg to Rosstrappe (steeper route). Return to Thale via the Schurre. It is possible to do this route in either direction.
